Yerba Mate information
Yerba mate has been around for centuries. It was first consumed by the Guarani Indians centuries ago. It is brewed from the dried leaves and stems of the Ilex Paraguariense bush, which is found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. It is commonly referred to as the “drink of the Gods.” It is the national drink in Argentina. Traditionally, it is steeped and served in a hollowed-out gourd and sipped through a metal straw designed to filter out stems and leaf bits.
Sale of yerba mate has grown into a $250 million a year business. Many consider it to be a healthy alternative to coffee. In fact, it contains 8-11 times the antioxidant level of green tea, vitamins, a natural appetite suppressant, and caffeine, without the negative side effects.
Yerba mate has an earthy taste, somewhere between green tea and chamomile tea. There are many blends available today, including green tea, rooibos tea, and flavorings. It is available in tea bags, loose-leaf tea and concentrates.
Of course, if you try yerba mate, we recommend organic yerba mate, now widely available. Enjoy!!
