Organic Restaurants

Green dining

Organic restaurants are springing up across the U.S. in response to the needs and wants of consumers. As the demand for organic food continues to increase, so do the number of establishments that cater to their customers with locally grown, certified organic menu items. The cuisine and style of restaurant vary greatly, as well. Here, you will find a partial listing of unique restaurants with one thing in common; they support local farmers and they prepare their ingredients with care.

Many consumers are concerned about food safety, nutrition, and genetically modified organisms. In light of this, they are more particular about what they eat when they go out. Many eateries are aware of this, and are catering to this growing segment of the population.

Consumers can find a directory of certified "green restaurants", which employ such methods as recycling and composting at their establishments, and that grow their own produce. A list of restaurants can be found at the Green Restaurant Association website.

At last, we can eat out and eat well, while helping the planet! Below is a listing of some of the most well-known organic restaurants.

Blue Hill at Stone Barns (and NY City) organic restaurants

Blackbird organic restaurant (French-inspired)

Chez Panisse organic restaurant - California
This is Alice Water's famous restaurant, which pioneered green cooking in the United States. (Alice Waters also founded the Chez Panisse Foundation.)

Harvest restaurant - Wisconsin
This restaurant features locally grown, organic produce, with French and American influences.

Organic Restaurant Nora
Located in Washington, D.C., it was the first certified organic restaurant in the United States.

Manresa Restaurant - California
The produce used at Manresa Restaurant is grown biodynamically and specifically for them. The menu has a distinct European flair - a combination of French and Spanish cuisine.

Savoy Restaurant - New York City
We have fond memories of visits to the Union Square freshmarket, with its dozens of stalls selling fresh farmed produce, meats and cheeses. The chef at the famed Savoy visits the same market to produce unusual offerings - even free range chicken.

Moosewood Restaurant
Some of you might have recognized the name; Moosewood Restaurant soups and entrees are available in the freezer section of many supermarkets.

If you would like additional information, you can visit the Chef's Collaborative website.
