Organic soda - on the rise

soda can

Organic soda is a relative newcomer to the organic beverage segment. One of the first organic beverage companies, Jones Organics organic soda company, began in the 1990's providing cool flavors of organic soda to the public. Today, they produce other natural beverages, but their soda remains popular.
Can organic soda really be good for you? Well, let's take a look at what regular soda has to offer. Most soft drinks contain artificial flavorings, preservatives, caffeine, and phosphoric acid (linked to bone loss), not to mention the sweeteners they contain. In contrast to this, organic sodas have none of the above, no added sodium, and up to 95% organic ingredients. For those of us who enjoy our can or bottle of fizz, it sounds a whole lot better.
Below is a list of the more popular organic soda manufacturers.

Santa Cruz organic soda With 95% organic ingredients, and 130 calories, it's not a diet drink. That's because it's packed with great juice taste. Try their Orange Mango soda.

Whole Earth Foods organic soda Their organic cola is a winner, made with the African cola nut and 95% organic ingredients. It's also suitable for vegans; many may not know that other cola producers (shall we mention Coca-Cola?) use ingredients that are tested on animals or derived from animal by-products like glycerin. This drink is not. It contains about 172 calories per can.

Other all-natural sodas, like Fizzy Lizzy, Steaz, and R.W. Knudsen, are available in most supermarkets.

The newest addition to the category of neutraceuticals, or foods that claim to provide health benefits, is a health drink called Nutrisoda - the "Good Soda". Produced by Airforce, it comes with names like Renew, Calm, Slender, and Energize. Each drink contains natural ingredients that claim to aid with anxiety, fat burning, and memory loss. And they contain 10-15 calories per 8.4 oz serving (250 mL). You can visit their website for more information, including a look at their ingredient lists.

Maine Root organic sodas
A recent phenomenon produced by two brothers, Maine Root sodas are made with organic cane juice, purified water, natural extracts and spices. A favorite is their root beer.
