Organic health products

herb capsules

Organic health products are a $20 billion industry in the U.S. Organic health products comprise health supplements (including vitamins and herbs) and alternative medicine products. Recently, their lack of regulation has come into question by the FDA. No doubt, Big Pharma would like to make it difficult for consumers to obtain our health products without a prescription.

In 2004, at least 29% of Americans used some form of herbal product, and it continues to increase. One reason for taking organic health supplements may have to do with the fact that when people take prescription drugs, they can leech nutrients from the body. Taking broad-spectrum antibiotics depletes the intestinal flora, resulting in stomach upset, diarrhea, and even yeast infections. Estrogen replacement therapy can cause a depletion of important B vitamins. Taking anticonvulsants may cause a depletion of Vitamin D, folic acid, and calcium. While we do not recommend that you stop taking prescription medications, it's important to be aware of these side-effects so that consumers can take steps to minimize them.

Even too much stress can affect our vitamin needs. Over time, this can leave us feeling less healthy than we would like to be.

So why organic health products? Savvy consumers are looking for more natural, pesticide and contaminant-free alternatives to traditional medications for maintaining optimum health. Because the supplement industry is not currently regulated by the FDA, it's important to read labels and to learn where and how the products are being produced. For those who would like to try growing their own organic herbs to use in teas, salves, and tinctures, please visit our page about growing organic herbs.

Read an article which describes the importance of choosing natural supplements over synthetic ones, entitled "The Vitamin Myth exposed." You can click here to read the organicconsumers.org article.

Below are a few links to companies that provide consumers with natural, organically produced health products.

Solaray organic dietary supplements
Solaray vitamins and herbal supplements are certified organic by the Bio-Organic Agriculture Association, and are encased in 100% vegetarian vegetable cellulose. They can be purchased online at this site. To learn more about Solaray and similar products, go to Neutraceutical.com.

Pleasant Stone Farm vitamin and herb supplements
We love these products. Our favorite is Vitaminerall-Plus Multi Formula Two with green superfoods (which includes spirulina, chlorella, and lots of grasses). You're guaranteed to boost your energy level with these ingredients, which provide enzymes and other micronutrients that are often missing in our diets.

American Botanical Pharmacy herbal supplements
Again, this is one of our favorites. For proper nutrition and lots of energy, nothing beats the Superfood formula, grown by Dr. Schulze himself at his California facility. For issues with elimination, the Intestinal Formulas use organic, wild-harvested senna, barberry, and cascara sagrada to gently eliminate constipation.
