According to The Organic Center, organic catsup has benefits that go far beyond taste. The USDA measured levels of the antioxidant lycopene in 13 brands of commercial and organic brands of catsup On average, the organic brands had 57% higher levels of lycopene than the national brands, which were not organic.
But getting back to taste, there is one brand that I wholeheartedly recommend for its amazing tomato flavor. Seeds of Change Certified Organic Tomato Ketchup is my hands-down favorite. (You can learn more about their products at
the Seeds of Change website.
Add to this the benefit of having no added sugars or artificial preservatives. All you get is pure tomato taste. And isn't this the reason why we buy catsup in the first place?
Good uses for organic catsup include 1) adding it to bases in homemade soups and stews; 2) mixing with stewed tomatoes to make marinara, puttunesca or arriabata sauces for pasta; 3) using as-is in place of cocktail sauce for seafood, as well as on fries, of course.
Do you need one more reason to eat organic catsup regularly? The FDA recently indicated that there is sufficient scientific evidence that consumption of tomatoes or tomato sauce may be linked to a reduced rate of prostate cancer. They did not make the same claim for lycopene supplements, however, indicating that it is best to obtain lycopene from food sources.
Be sure to check labels, as not all organic ketchups are created equal. Some still contain sugar; you should also check for sodium content if you are on a low-salt diet.
