Organic breads

organic breads

Anyone who has sampled the full-bodied, nutty flavor of organic breads would surely not want to go back to "ordinary" breads. Made from whole grains, without pesticides or genetically modified organisms, certified organic breads are available in most major supermarkets today. More and more artisan breads are created using certified organic grains, offering consumers of all persuasions a larger variety of flavors. In addition to the Certified Organic stamp, many organic breads also incorporate the Whole Grain stamp. Much research has shown that whole grains contribute more fiber and other vital nutrients to our diets (3 servings/day, or a total of 48 grams/day are recommended). Recently, the Whole Grain Stamp was enhanced to tell consumers how many grams of whole grain ingredients are included in each serving. For more information about the Whole Grain stamp, and a list of companies that use it, visit the Whole Grains Council website.

In addition, more and more consumers are looking for gluten-free, yeast-free alternatives to traditional breads. Many organic breads are available without gluten, dairy, wheat, or yeast. A few examples are given below. For more information about whole grains, click here.

Just as important as good eating is good stewardship. Organic farmers are required to adhere to stringent guidelines as put forth by the National Organic Program, which includes the practices that they use to prevent contamination of organic products by non-organic products. By growing organic crops, using cover crops and implementing natural weed and pest management practices, they help to preserve the health of the soil, as well as their own health. Organizations like the Rodale Institute, which hosts a website for organic farmers; the Northeast Organic Farming Association of NY, and others, provide support to farmers who want to provide organic grains to the public. When you buy certified organic breads, you know that you are getting the most wholesome breads that money can buy. They may cost a little more, but isn't your family worth it?

Below are just a few companies that sell organic breads and bread alternatives.
